Michael Pollan discusses the way population health is affected by industrialized agriculture. Warnings have been issued on national level, “calling attention to the public health risks of the way we are raising pork and other meat” and stipulating that the way these animal operations function, "creates a perfect environment for the generation of new flu pandemics".

He approaches the main problems the intensive livestock farming raise, the “sustainability” of genetic modified foods, the false marketing claims used to promote processed products as being healthy and the omnipresence of high fructose corn syrup.

Using multiple examples, Pollan focuses on “the food industry’s ingenuity in taking any critique of industrial food and turning it into the next marketing strategy”.
